Enchanting and Idiosyncratic beauty of the Oriental Revival Style

Built in 1925 in the heart of Old Hollywood, The Nirvana is a testament to the enchanting and idiosyncratic beauty of the Oriental Revival style. This architectural genre was at its peak in Hollywood during the 1920s and can also be experienced nearby at the Grauman Chinese Theatre and Grauman Egyptian Theatre. The architectural style blends Eastern aesthetics and Western design and seeks to offer a tantalizing glimpse into a world where architecture transcends geography. Oriental Revivalism is not just about aesthetics. It is a narrative of cultural fusion and a fascinating architectural movement with a history dating to the late 18th century.

A Blend of Mysticism and Wonder

E.M. Erderly, the architect of The Nirvana, illustrated his vision for the apartment hotel through the artistic depicted of the grand mural in the building’s lower and upper lobbies. Animated by tales from explorers and enamored with the mysticism and beauty of Eastern cultures, Mr. Elderly provided exotic and elaborate designs, borrowing elements from Islamic and Far Eastern architectural traditions. The Nirvana incorporates elements of the so-called Chinese Chippendale style within its windows and door systems, where representations of Western and Chinese design motifs are clearly visible.

Living it up in the Apartment Hotel California

The Nirvana is one of the last operating apartment hotels in California. Apartment hotels have all but disappeared from our housing landscape. Apartment Hotels are not simply apartments or hotels, they are functionally flexible, representing a mashup of transient and permanent housing. Over the past century and a half, apartment hotels have served as a bridge that normalizes communal city living for immigrants and minorities without minimum or maximum duration stays. Guests could check in for one night and check out anytime they like.
